For utilities, industry & contracting

From cost factor to revenue system.

Electricity, heat and flexibility from one energy centre.

Dezentrale Multi-Energie-Systeme // DMES

Grid expansion is expensive. Storage is faster.

The Swiss PV expansion from around 10 to up to 40 GWp makes neither technical nor economic sense without storage, according to the Swissgrid white paper of March 2026. Annualised grid costs will rise by up to 100 per cent by 2050. The bottleneck does not arise in generation but in the timing of grid capacity and demand. And the classic way out is stalling. Swiss utilities report that roughly half of their BESS projects fail because of noise objections. Inside buildings, large battery stores fail on fire load and approval. Anyone who wants urban flexibility needs a different technology.

One system. Three revenue levels.

Each store in its own market. A DMES is not an electricity store but an energy centre with three revenue levels. The integrated short-duration store serves the fast markets, namely control energy, intraday, peak shaving and system services. The metal hydride long-duration store takes on the seasonal shift and grid relief, building-integrated and over 30 years. Thermal extraction supplies heat in both seasons, and because the energy sits in the molecule, the DMES is at the same time the most compact thermal store. And DMES are not an invention of ours. In its summary, the National Research Programme “Energy” of the Swiss National Science Foundation states verbatim “Implement decentralised multi-energy systems (DMES)!”. Among its reasons it names the fact that DMES avoid costly grid expansion. Energy Intelligence orchestrates all levels. Revenue stacking instead of dependence on a single market. Added to that is security of supply. On request we design the system to be black-start capable, so it carries the building it stands in through a grid outage. Thanks to long-duration storage, autonomy then lasts for days instead of hours. And where there is no grid, a DMES can also be designed as a permanent island grid.

Summer // surplus

  1. Photovoltaics Own production on the roof
  2. Electrolysis Electricity becomes hydrogen and heat
  3. H₂ in metal hydride Solid state at 35 bar, inside the building

Winter // demand

  1. Fuel cell Hydrogen becomes electricity and heat
  2. Electricity Site, vZEV and LEG, grid
  3. Heat Heating, hot water, heat network
While charging, the waste heat of the electrolysis supports the hot water preparation; on every cycle the fuel cell covers it in full.

over 75 % overall efficiency with combined electricity and heat use · over 30 years service life · 0.5 to 16 MWh per room · modularly scalable to over 100 MWh

The figures behind it.

101 MWh · 12 MW

Reference design AREAL. Four identical systems, footprint 336 m². Thermal in addition, 29 MWh of storage and 1.2 MW of output.

30+ years

Service life of metal hydride. A BESS lasts 10 to 15 years. The metal hydride store lasts 30 years and more.

20 000 cycles

Cycle stability. Metal hydride, with over 98 % performance still remaining afterwards.

Up to 20 years

Performance guarantee. On the metal hydride storage technology. Basis of bankability.

Under 10 years

Payback possible, under ideal conditions.

> 75 %

Overall efficiency. With coupled use of electricity and heat.

Heat in both seasons. No BESS can do that.

The system delivers heat whether it charges or discharges. While charging, the waste heat of the electrolysis supports the hot water preparation. On every cycle it runs, the fuel cell covers the hot water load in full. In winter its waste heat additionally feeds the network. Without wood and without fossil fuels. A storage project becomes an additional revenue stream in the heat business.

Decentralised, intelligent, bankable.

Decentralised instead of central.

The energy centre is built where generation and consumption take place, without transmission losses and without a national H₂ infrastructure as a precondition.

Energy Intelligence as a layer of its own.

Forecast-based control, multi-asset optimisation across electricity, heat, H₂ and grid supply, peak shaving and balancing in vZEV / LEG. Anchored in the founding team.

Structured to be bankable.

Long-term service agreements and performance commitments over the project term. Main components interchangeable across manufacturers instead of a single point of failure. Realised by the pioneer of decentralised multi energy systems in Europe, eRevo AG Energy Revolution, proven in real operation since April 2024.

We design your location, with load profiles, PV yield, waste heat, grid costs and the complete business case, that is when the plant pays for itself and what it earns for decades afterwards. The dimensioning follows your load profile, not a rule of thumb.
